Many thanks to Joe Street and his free plans
web site (see link below) for all the help
designing our very first large scale Biodiesel
vacuum flash evaporator & reactor. The
whole project took less than 3 month's to
construct and utilized one sealed 500 gallon
propane tank as the vessel.
Hydronic heat input came from an oil fired
hot water heater that actually burned pure
biodiesel ! Regulated air pressure is used
to discharge finished biodiesel fuel with no
pump required.
Creating a high vacuum inside the reactor /
dryer lowers the boiling point of water
"moisture contained with in oil", the water
vapours are then condensed inside a cold
coaxial dryer tube and collected inside a
second auxiliary sealed vacuum tank. This
process separates the water from the WVO.
Used cooking oil or WVO was pre -
filtered , preheated, bubble washed, and
stored in a 2500 litre milk tank RIGHT>
as feed stock. The freon cooling tubes
on this stainless tank were modified to
flow hot hydronic water from the hot
water heater. The preheat temp was 60C
In 2007 this 1500 litre batch style
vacuum reactor produced over 85,000
litres B100 biodiesel in under the first
year of operation. This unit has been
sold to one lucky farmer in Ontario .
The unit incorporated a sealed
magnetic drive circulation pump from
Sethco that circulated the contents
every 5 minutes. Vacuum design also
allowed for 95% of the total excess
methanol to be recovered for reuse.

155,000 km on B100 biodiesel with no
HP loss and slight mileage gains. In
total between 3 dump trucks we have
logged a total of 325,000 km on pure

GREAT NEWS !!! NEW ETHANOL - ESTER REACTOR BUILD CLASS on next page. Great news, Joe Street has agreed to help me design a brand new reactor capable of reacting WVO with ethanol !! I have been hording pieces and parts, collecting pumps and screens ,3A sieves and heated vessels ,We are going to do this again right here on the web, pictures from start to finish for free. The discussion forum will be hosted at his yahoo mail list We need you.

"the beast"
One 5 hp Honda pressure pump RIGHT>
provides 50 psi to move WVO through a
bag filter canister, cleaning food waste
particles and leaving oil ready for water
washing. 20 percent water is added to
the oil. An aquarium style air bubble
stone "washes" removes the detergents
and other water soluble impurities such
as gravy, mustard etc from oil leaving
high quality feedstock oil ready for the
biodiesel reaction.
<LEFT. Methanol, potassium hydroxide (also referred
to as KOH) mixer is built from a 200 litre pickle barrel.
The complex mixer has twin stainless steel bearings
supporting a stir bar "with drill" , ventilation system to
remove methoxide fumes, stainless steel 1/4 inch pick
up tube, chemical funnel is built in with cover to insert
KOH flakes, and 2 inch methanol supply hose. I would
recommend an air power drill although the ventilation
system worked so good it really was not required.
When potassium hydroxide flakes are dissolved in
methanol you get methoxide. Methoxide is
administered into the oil stream feeding the suction
side of the sealed magnetic drive pump. The chemical
reaction known as transesterfication takes place inside
the biodiesel reactor converting used cooking oil into
biodiesel and the by product glycerin.
Composting all my glycerin into wood bark mulch
shavings , produced some of the richest organic black
dirt mulch I have ever seen, the alkali in the glycerin
neutralizes the acid in the wood bark. The flower
garden absolutely loved it!!
